The naira recorded a notable week-on-week appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market.
Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that between January 9 and January 16, 2026, the naira strengthened by N5.22 against the dollar. The local currency closed at N1,417.95 per dollar on Friday, representing a 0.37 percent gain from the N1,423.17 recorded during the same period last week.
During the week, the naira posted gains on four trading days, with its only loss recorded on Wednesday.
At the parallel (black) market, the naira remained stable, trading at N1,490 per dollar throughout the week under review.
The improved performance comes amid a steady increase in Nigeria’s external reserves, which rose by $0.19 billion, or 0.42 percent, to $45.86 billion as of Thursday, January 15, 2026, from $45.67 billion recorded the previous Friday.
