Real Madrid have dismissed Xabi Alonso from his role as head coach, the club confirmed on Monday.
The decision comes less than 24 hours after Los Blancos suffered a 3–2 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Supercopa final. Following the loss, Alonso played down the significance of the competition, describing it as “the least important” tournament Madrid would contest this season.
The former Spain international had been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, with the team struggling for consistency in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League.
Alonso’s exit also comes at a delicate time for the Spanish giants, just two days before their Copa del Rey Round of 16 fixture against Albacete. Real Madrid are expected to announce an interim manager as they prepare for the crucial encounter.
