One person has been confirmed dead after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State in the early hours of Friday, with several others feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received a distress call about the collapse at 12:10 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of its Cobra Response Team from its Onipanu Base.
He said the emergency response team arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m. and discovered that the two-storey building, which was still under construction, had collapsed.
The LASEMA permanent secretary explained that preliminary observations indicated that construction workers might have been trapped beneath the debris, prompting the commencement of search and rescue operations.
He added that emergency responders immediately began efforts to locate and evacuate the victims while implementing safety measures to protect those trapped and personnel involved in the rescue operation.
Oke-Osanyintolu said rescue operations were ongoing as emergency officials worked to determine whether more people remained trapped beneath the rubble.
