Nigerian-American rapper, Wale, has opened up about the role he played in the rise of Afrobeats star, Wizkid, revealing that he helped introduce the singer to an international audience.
Wale made the disclosure during a livestream with skit maker Carter Efe, where he spoke about his long-standing relationship with the Grammy-winning artist.
According to Wale, he has been following Nigerian music for years and has built personal relationships with some of its biggest stars, including Wizkid.
“I have been following Nigerian music. There are so many Nigerian artists I like listening to. I don’t know some of them personally, but I enjoy their music,” he said.
Speaking further, Wale described Wizkid as his close friend, noting that their relationship dates back nearly a decade.
“There are some I know personally like Wizkid. Me and Wizkid have been cool for almost 10 years now. I remember taking him to his first BET Awards show. That is my boy,” he said.
The American rapper also revealed that he once accommodated Wizkid in Beverly Hills, California, for an entire summer while they worked on music together.
“I once accommodated him in Beverly Hills for a whole summer. We were just writing music. We made a lot of songs together like ‘Drop for Me’,” Wale added.
