Why APC should stop defending INEC- Bashir Ahmad

Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad has urged members and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to refrain from justifying every perceived lapse of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ahmad made the call in a post shared on his official X handle on Friday night amid the ongoing dispute between the electoral body and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

DAILY POST reports that the APC had earlier supported INEC’s controversial decision to suspend recognition of the leadership of the ADC led by David Mark.

While opposition figures have decried what they described as oppression of critics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the ruling party maintained that nothing catastrophic would occur if the ADC were excluded from the 2027 ballot.

Reacting to the development, Ahmad warned that uncritical support for INEC could reinforce suspicions of bias ahead of the next general elections.

“I don’t know if it is only me, but I strongly feel that we, as supporters of the APC, should stop defending every shortcoming of INEC or its leadership,” he wrote.

“Doing so only fuels the allegations that the electoral body is working to favor our party in the upcoming elections, which is simply not true.”
