The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day.
The announcement was made in a statement posted on the mission’s official X account.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day—a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May in honor of U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service of their country,” the mission stated.
Memorial Day is a solemn federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
“It is a time for visiting cemeteries and memorials to mourn military personnel who died in the line of duty,” the statement added.
As part of the annual observance, volunteers traditionally place American flags on the graves of fallen service members in national cemeteries across the United States.
