Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why he substituted Bukayo Saka during the second half of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first-leg clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
Saka was replaced by Noni Madueke shortly after the hour mark at the BayArena as Arteta sought a different approach on the right wing.
Madueke later played a decisive role in the match, winning a late penalty that was converted by Kai Havertz in the 89th minute to secure a 1–1 draw for the Gunners.
Speaking after the game, Arteta said the change was made to introduce a new attacking threat.
“I thought we needed something else,” the Spaniard said.
“Noni has been contributing and being a real threat, and I decided to make the change.”
Arteta also praised Madueke for his impact, particularly his ability to challenge defenders.
“It’s not surprising,” he added. “That’s his greatest strength. He consistently attempts bold dribbles and poses a threat to opponents.”
