Tinubu suspends FAAN’s cashless policy amid Nigerian Airport gridlock

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate suspension of the controversial cashless policy introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The decision comes just four days after the policy’s rollout on March 1 led to widespread congestion at major airports across the country.

The initiative required motorists and passengers to make digital payments using “Go Cashless” cards or Point of Sale (POS) systems for access gates, parking, and lounge services.

However, the implementation triggered heavy traffic gridlock at key airports, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The situation left many motorists stranded in long queues, with several passengers reportedly missing their flights.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo disclosed the president’s directive while briefing State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by Tinubu.

According to the minister, the president instructed FAAN’s management and the ministry to suspend the policy’s implementation pending a comprehensive review. Tinubu also directed them to return to the drawing board and come up with a more people-friendly approach that ensures revenue transparency without compromising passenger convenience.
