Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer to Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, has said that Kanu will approach the appeal court to overturn the life sentence handed to him on Thursday by the federal high court for terrorism.
Nigerian Newssphere reported that the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sensentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment.
Justice James Omotosho handed down the judgement after delivering a landmark ruling in the trial of the IPOB leader.
DAILY POST reported that Omotosho had earlier convicted Kanu on all seven counts of terrorism charges brought against him by the Department of State Services.
In his judgement, the judge held that the prosecution presented sufficient and credible evidence to prove its case.
He noted that Kanu failed to enter a defence, instead choosing to rest his case on the prosecution’s evidence—a gamble the court said left it with no option but to convict.However, speaking shortly after the sentencing, Ejimakor described Omotosho’s judgement as a travesty of justice.
He said, “Today will forever live in infamy. From here, we will approach the appeal court. We are pretty sure the justices will agree with us that today was the symbol of the travesty of justice. If the court of appeal disagrees with us, we head to the supreme court, but by God almighty, Kanu is not going to stand convicted. It’s going to be overturned.
