Oshiomhole reacts as fuel tanker explosion injures scores, properties worth millions destroyed in Auchi

Scores injured and properties worth millions burnt after a fuel tanker explosion in Auchi, the administrative headquarters of the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, has left scores of residents injured and properties worth hundreds of millions of naira destroyed.

The incident occurred when a petrol tanker reportedly overturned along the Auchi–Okene Highway, spilling its highly flammable contents into drainage channels across parts of the town. Some of the fuel was said to have flowed into underground tunnels, escalating the danger.

Eyewitnesses said the tanker later caught fire, with flames spreading rapidly through the drainage network and triggering multiple explosions in different locations, including Igbe Road, the Warrake Road Junction near AP, and nearby areas.

Residents within the affected zones sustained varying degrees of injuries during the explosions. Victims were taken to the General Hospital in Auchi, while others received treatment at private medical facilities in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Eno Ikoedem, said the explosion occurred at about 6:30 p.m. after the tanker fell. She noted that officers from the Auchi Divisional Police Headquarters and the Area Command were immediately deployed to secure the scene and prevent further damage.

“Our officers promptly cordoned off the affected areas to ensure public safety. No fatalities have been officially recorded,” she said.

Reacting to the development, Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, described the explosion as disturbing and urged residents and motorists to remain cautious, particularly during the festive season when traffic and commercial activities increase.

In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole said reports, images, and videos of the incident circulating online were verified through engagements with community leaders. He added that he is in contact with relevant state and federal authorities, emergency agencies, and other stakeholders to improve response strategies and coordination for handling similar emergencies in the future.
