NCC advises on automatic updates of Antiviruses to avoid vulnerabilities

0

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has advised telecom consumers and other Information and Communications Technology (ICT) end users on the need to always enable automatic update features for AVAST and AVG antiviruses to prevent potential cyber vulnerabilities.

This was contained in a new advisory released by the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), the cybersecurity centre for the telecom sector established by the Commission, in continuation of its resolve to always keep Nigerians safe in the cyber space.

The advisory noted that cyber vulnerability in AVAST and AVG Antiviruses can lead to attacks on millions of devices with high impact in terms of consequences to the ICT user. The threat types as a result of this vulnerability are Bypass Authentication, Remote Code Execution and Unauthorised Access while consequences range from Privilege Escalation, Bypass Security Products, Overwrite System Components and corrupting the Operating System.

According to CSIRT, researchers at SentinelOne security firm have discovered two potentially damaging vulnerabilities in AVAST and AVG antivirus products that allow attackers to escalate privileges enabling them to disable security products, overwrite system components, corrupt the operating system, or perform malicious operations unimpeded.

“Two vulnerabilities identified as CVE-2022-26522 and CVE-2022-26523 targeted the “Anti Rootkit” driver of Avast antivirus (also used by AVG) allowing an attacker with limited privileges on the targeted system to execute code in system mode (kernel mode) and take complete control of the device. Moreover, the vulnerabilities allow complete take-over of a device, even without privileges, due to the ability to execute code in kernel mode,” the CSIRT said in the advisory.

However, the cybersecurity centre has offered a tripartite measures that should be taken by Internet/ICT users to prevent being vulnerable to the cyber threats. They include enabling automatic update feature for AVAST and AVG antiviruses, upgrading AVAST and AVG antiviruses to version 22.1.2504, as well as carrying out regular patch management.

Fresh air tech startups as the Federal Executive Council has approved a plan to incentivise and further harness Nigeria’s digital innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, during its meeting on 18th May, 2022.

This followed the presentation of a memo by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami.

The approval will enable the implementation of strategies to encourage and support the development and growth of more Innovation-Driven Enterprises (IDEs), which have the potential to create millions of additional jobs in the country. This will also help to develop innovative solutions to societal problems, and rapidly grow, as well as diversify the Nigerian economy, in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a Digital Nigeria.

A number of the proposed strategies resulted from recommendations that were made at an interactive forum held on 22nd February 2022, where the Honourable Minister led a Federal Government Delegation on a working visit to the Lagos digital innovation ecosystem. The delegation included the Director-General of NITDA, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Post Master General and the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Plc. The visit provided a useful platform for open and interactive discussions on the ecosystem’s pertinent challenges and interventions required from the government to enable the ecosystem achieve its full potential. The forum was attended by 143 ICT and Startup Companies.

The delegation also paid a visit to 3 selected tech startups, namely: Flutterwave (currently valued at US$3 billion), Treepz (with a current funding of US$3.1 million) and Reliance Health (with US$48.3 million in funding). It is worthy to that under the able administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, Nigeria became home to 5 of about 8 Unicorns (startup companies valued at over US$1Billion) on the African Continent.

Furthermore, Nigeria’s startup ecosystem attracted about 35% (estimated at US$1.4Billion) of the over US$4Billion raised by African startups, which is the highest raised by any startup ecosystem on the continent. Most importantly, it has created a significant number of jobs. For instance, Jumia, an indigenous e-Commerce company, provides over 3,000 direct jobs according to Jobberman’s 2020 Digital Sector Report. The report also asserts that the Nigeria’s Digital Economy has the potential to create an average of 1.3million tech-enabled jobs across industries in 5 years (i.e. by 2025).

To further strengthen the ecosystem, the Federal Executive Council approved the following recommendations, in line with the Executive Order 003 and Presidential Order 005:
that the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) should prioritise the granting of Tax Reliefs and other Incentives such as the Pioneer Status Incentive (PSI) Scheme to the technology and innovation ecosystem;
that the Nigerian Copyright Commission, the Trademarks Registry, and the Patents and Designs Registry should work with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in developing an Intellectual Property (IP) framework for the technology and innovation ecosystem within two (2) months; and
that the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) should work with NITDA to develop a framework that will ensure the involvement of technology innovation startups in government procurement processes to encourage ideation, innovation and design of solutions to solve development challenges within two (2) months.
The Nigeria Startup Bill (NSB) was earlier approved by the Federal Executive Council and forwarded to the National Assembly and the process is about 90% complete.

The approval of the incentives at the Council will consolidate the gains recorded for far in the NSB process. The implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) emphasises the importance of the innovation and startup ecosystem to the development of an indigenous digital economy. The Ministry will continue to position Nigeria to develop this ecosystem in order to transform Nigeria into a country with a sustainable and thriving digital economy.

Gov El-Rufai confirms presence of Boko Haram, Ansaru terrorists in Kaduna

0

The Insecurity menace in Nigeria seems to have worsen as the Governor of Kaduna State,  Nasir El-Rufai has raised alarm over the recent infiltration of Boko Haram and Ansaru who have now enclaved the Birnin Gwari and Chukun local government areas of the state.

This is just as the Defence Headquarters disclosed that the troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised 43 terrorists, arrested 20 and rescued 63 kidnapped victims across the North East within three weeks.

Security expert who spoke exclusively with Nigerian Newssphere offered that the federal government should address all grievances and exclusion contributing to the spate in terrorism activities in Nigeria.

In the recent infiltration of ISWAP into Kaduna state, El-Rufai expressed worries over the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the state, which, according to the Governor, was enough terrifying signal that the deadly terrorist groups have moved into the state.

This disclosure was made by the Governor after the presentation of the Kaduna State Security Incident Report for the first quarter of 2022, which took place at the Council Chambers of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House.

He said the debriefing of the first Abuja-Kaduna train kidnap victim to be released indicated that the terrorists were making comments like “the forests in Kaduna are even better than that of Sambisa and so they should all relocate here.”

“The problem of insecurity now has moved from the North East to the North West.
“The situation in the North West is far more serious and could be potentially more dangerous than we have ever had in the North East.
“And we would like the military and security agencies to take notice of this before it goes out of control,” he warned.

El-Rufai further called attention to the use of IEDs and mines in Kaduna, adding that the state had been lucky while appreciating the security agencies who have been instrumental in defusing “many of the IEDs without loss of lives.”

“A movement from banditry to terrorism with expertise in making explosive devices. And again this is because Boko Haram and Ansaru elements have moved into the state,” he maintained.
Nigerian troops kill 43 terrorists, capture 20, rescue 63 victims in North East While briefing the journalists on the operations of the Armed Forces between April 28 and May 19, the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Bernard Onyeuko, said that 1,627 Boko Haram terrorists and their families, comprising 331 men, 441 women and 855 children, surrendered to the troops at different locations between the dateline.

Disclosing that 53,262 had so far surrendered as of May 16, he said troops killed Malam Shehu, who was the Amir and spiritual head of the group, and some of his foot soldiers during a clearance operation in their enclaves at Jaje, Mango Ali, Dissa, Balangaje.

Troops had on May 14 neutralised Abubakar Sarki, a terrorist commander, and his fighters in Sambisa Forest at Yuwe in Konduga Local Government Area of the state, he added.

According to him, troops nabbed Malam Modu Pantami on the outskirt of Benishied Village in Kaga Local Government Area while attempting to transport large quantity of logistics items to terrorists.

“Consequently, during these operations, troops rescued 63 civilians, neutralised 42 terrorists, and arrested 20 terrorists.

“Troops also recovered two LMGS, 21 AK47 rifles, 11 AK 56 rifles, 22 MGs, 419 rounds of 7.62mm and 54mm ammunition, one gun turret, 31 AK 47 magazines, three motorcycles, and six bicycles.
“Other items recovered are one pumping machine, two bandolier belts containing 377 rounds of 7.62mm and 54mm ammunition and one Isuzu vehicle.

“All surrendered Boko Haram Terrorists, recovered items, rescued civilians and captured terrorists have been handed over to appropriate authorities for further actions,” he added.

In Operation Whirl Stroke, Onyeuko said the Nigerian Military killed 13 bandits in clearance operations across Benue and Taraba States during the period.

According to Onyeuko, troops recovered 27 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, one motorcycle and eight phones.

“The military high command appreciates the general populace for their continued cooperation with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Nigeria Police and other security agencies in their fight against all forms of criminalities in the country.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is determined to bring peace back to our dear country while saluting the courage and sacrifices by its troops in the field,” Onyeuko concluded.

FG should address grievances, exclusion contributing to menace — Security Expert

While reacting to the latest security threat in a chat with Nigerian NewsDirect yesterday, a security expert and Chief Executive Officer, Beacon Security Consult, Dr. Kabiru Adamu said Government should address grievances, exclusion perceived to be contributing to terrorism escalation.

According to him, “The presentation of the Kaduna State First Quarter 2022 security report is commendable. The state’s adoption of data and metrics is a novel approach in Nigeria.

“Among several trends in the report is the alarm that two terror groups are finding safe havens in the state. These are, what the state calls ‘Boko Haram’ and Ansaru. It says the groups are behind some of the attacks in the state. This development is in line with what my consultancy has been reporting.

“Other concerns raised by the governor is the adoption of IEDs as attack vectors. This too we have reported in my consultancy’s report.
“The Governor also spoke about drug addiction  and the supply chain that supports drug supply to bandits.

“The one thing that the report and the governor did not mention is how grievance and exclusion is real and perceived contributes to security challenges in the state.” he stated.
