Nigeria’s Supreme Court registrar earns 66.7% higher than CJN- Justice Dattijo

The just retired Supreme Court Justice, Musa Dattijo Muhammad, has lamented the poor salary structure of Justices in Nigeria.

Muhammad, on Friday in Abuja at a valedictory court session held in his honour, disclosed that the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court earns more than the Justices.

According to him, the monthly salary of the apex court registrar stood at N1.2m while Justices get N751,000, representing a 37.4 per cent disparity.

He said that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, is receiving only N400,000 plus monthly salary, which is 66.7 per cent less when compared to the N1.2m monthly take-home of the Supreme Court Registrar.

He decried why Justices’ salaries decreased despite adding responsibility.

“It may interest one to know that the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court earns more than the Justices. While she earns N1.2m per month, justices take home N751,000 monthly.
“The CJN, on his part, takes home N400,000 plus. The salary of a Justice, curiously, drops rather than increases when he gets the added responsibility of being a CJN.

“That the unjust and embarrassing salary difference between the justices and the Chief Registrar still abides remains intriguing, to say the least.”

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

Justice John Okoro, giving his lead judgement, dismissed all seven petitions by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and his counterpart in the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Justice Okoro threw out appeals to admit fresh evidence document in the suit, 25 per cent Federal Capital Territory votes and claim of irregularities during the February 25 presidential election.

The Supreme Court, therefore, upheld the judgement of the Presidential Election Petitions Court on Wednesday, September 6, which affirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

All justices Uwani Abba-Aji, Lawal Garba, Ibrahim Saulawa, Adamu Jauro, Abubakar Tijjani and Emmanuel Akomaye Agim unanimously adopted the led judgement read by Justice Inyang Okoro.

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and his counterpart of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, challenged the Tribunal judgement affirming Tinubu’s victory.

Atiku and Obi had prayed the apex court set aside the September 6 judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, which dismissed their allegation that the election was rigged in favour of the ruling party.

The issues raised in the appeals include the eligibility of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s candidacy for the election.

The appellants also raised the issue of Mr Tinubu’s inability to secure 25 per cent of valid votes in Abuja during the polls.

They are also contesting INEC’s failure to electronically transmit polling unit results to its real-time Results Viewing (IReV) portal and allegations of vote manipulation in favour of Mr Tinubu.

Another petition was that Mr Tinubu’s academic records, which were obtained from the Chicago State University (CSU) in October by Atiku.

However, the Supreme dismissed all the petitions.

The Supreme Court dismissed Atiku Abukabar’s petition of the Peoples Democratic Party, challenging the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory.

Justice John Okoro disclosed this on Thursday while reading his verdict.

According to him, the appellant abandoned their duty to prove the non-compliance of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s declaration that Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was the valid winner of the presidential election held on February 25.

He stated that IREV is not a collation system.

He added that elections are conducted at polling units, not the IREV portal, saying that where the IREV portal fails, it does not stop the collation of results.

Newssphere had reported that the Supreme Court had commenced the pronouncement of Judgment on the appeal filed by Atiku Abubakr of the Peoples Democratic Party and his counterpart of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

They are praying the apex court set aside the September 6 judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, which dismissed their allegation that the election was rigged in favour of the ruling party.

Aside from challenging President Tinubu’s eligibility to participate in the contest, both Atiku, who came second, and Obi, who came third, maintained that he (Tinubu) did not secure the majority of valid votes that were cast during the election to be declared the winner.

The sky was blue in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter between Manchester City and the Swiss side Young Boys.

Manchester City hammered Young Boys 3-1 to secure a perfect three-match victory in their 2023/2024 UCL campaign.

According to AFP, Erling Haaland ended his Champions League goal drought as Manchester City extended their perfect start to the tournament with a 3-1 win at Swiss side Young Boys on Wednesday.

Haaland arrived in rain-lashed Bern without a goal in his previous five Champions League matches.

The City striker scored 35 goals in his first 30 Champions League appearances and got back on track in the competition with a second-half double at the Wankdorf Stadium.

Haaland’s penalty restored City’s lead after Meschack Elia cancelled Manuel Akanji’s second-half opener for the holders.

Switzerland defender Akanji’s first goal for City this season came on his return to his homeland, just days after he was sent off in the treble winners’ victory over Brighton in the Premier League.

Haaland struck again in the closing stages to wrap up the points and take him to 11 goals in all competitions this term.

Pep Guardiola’s side sit top of Group G after a third successive victory following their wins against Red Star Belgrade and RB Leipzig.

Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk: How Catalan edged the Pitmen to emerge victorious in UCL Matchday 3

0

Barcelona FC struggled to edge out Shakhtar Donetsk with a 2-1 scoreline at Wednesday’s UEFA Championship League Matchday 3.

Phenomena first-half goals from Barcelona’s players, Ferran Torres and Fermin Lopez, saw the Catalan triumph against the Pitmen at Camp Nou.

With the result, Barcelona retained its perfect Champion League Group H sheet.

Shakhtar midfielder Georgiy Sudakov stroked in a tidy finish on the counter in the 62nd minute to reduce the deficit, but Barcelona held on despite late pressure to secure their third win in three games.

The locals dominated from the start despite missing several key players due to injury and suspensions, and they opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a Torres volley on the rebound after 20-year-old Lopez’s strike from close range crashed against the woodwork.

The goal was initially ruled out for a hint of an offside in the build-up, but a VAR check confirmed Lopez’s involvement had been legal.

Without the injured Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Sergi Roberto, Frenkie de Jong, Jules Kounde and Pedri, and with midfielder Gavi suspended for a red card in Barcelona’s win against FC Porto, manager Xavi Hernandez called up eight academy players, including Lopez, who is becoming a regular in the first team.

He caused all kinds of trouble for Shakhtar and extended Barca’s lead in the 36th minute, unleashing a thunderous shot which ricocheted off the left post on its way in.

Barca then missed several chances to stretch out their lead, with Lopez hitting the post twice more and having two goals ruled out by VAR for offside.
