Popular and controversial Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre following allegations of defaming fellow actress Mercy Johnson.
An Abuja court ordered Okorie’s remand on Wednesday after she was arrested by law enforcement agents.
Nollywood filmmaker Stanley Ontop confirmed the development in a social media post, where he criticized the handling of the case and expressed concern over the speed of the judicial process.
Stanley accused Mercy Johnson of intimidation and urged her to seek redress through lawful means, stressing that defamation is a civil matter rather than a criminal offense.
“Free @realangelaokorie now, irrespective of who is involved. If you feel someone defamed you, kindly approach a competent court and sue the person involved,” he wrote on Instagram. “When will the Nigeria Police learn to do their work properly?”
He also questioned the swift court action, adding, “So the judiciary can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep tonight knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison. Angela, I will never forsake you.”
Nigerian Newssphere reports that Angela Okorie was arrested in Lagos late on Tuesday and flown to Abuja on Wednesday morning in connection with the case.
