Popular Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore on Thursday led a large protest in Aba, Abia State, calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The demonstration drew a significant crowd of supporters who gathered in the commercial city to demand Kanu’s freedom.
DAILY POST reports that Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 20 after being convicted on seven charges related to terrorism following a prolonged trial. He was subsequently transferred to a correctional facility in Sokoto despite objections from some Nigerians who questioned the decision.
Addressing protesters during the rally, Sowore insisted that President Bola Tinubu must ensure Kanu’s release.
According to him, the continued detention of the IPOB leader is unjust and unacceptable.
“Free Nnamdi Kanu now. I am a friend of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; I am also a friend and lover of justice,” Sowore told the crowd.
“I came here to say that by all means, Tinubu must free Nnamdi Kanu now. We warned them that sending Nnamdi Kanu to prison will never stand,” he added.
