Human Right Lawyer, Effiong sentenced to prison over contempt of court

…SERAP to sue Gov Udom, Buhari over Effiong’s detention

Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot on Wednesday sentenced a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, (Esq) to the state correctional centre for one month over perceived contempt of court.

Justice Obot before ordering the conviction warrant said she had run out of patience with the excesses and unruly behaviours of the embattled lawyer who is the defence counsel to Leo Ekpenyong.

Ekpenyong is standing trial in a libel suit instituted by the governor of the state, Mr Udom Emmanuel and Mr Effiong Dickson Bob.

According to Ihibehe who tweeted on his verified handle said, “I have just been sent to Uyo prison by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, for one month for defending Leo Ekpenyong in the libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

In reacting to the Court’s decision, Socio- Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) said its would sue the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Emmanuel Udom, President Muhammadu Buhari administration over Effiong’s detention.

“We’re suing Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Buhari administration over the unlawful detention of human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, and the apparent misuse of the justice system”, the group stated via twitter.
