Gabriele Gravina has stepped down as president of the Italian Football Federation following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
His resignation comes in the wake of an emergency meeting convened after Italy’s defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout during a European World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
At a crucial meeting held on Thursday, Gravina formally notified key stakeholders — including representatives of Lega Serie A, Serie B, Lega Pro, as well as players’ and coaches’ associations — of his decision to resign.
Gravina had assumed office in February 2025 but has now opted to step aside amid mounting pressure following the team’s disappointing campaign.
The federation confirmed that elections to appoint a new president will take place on June 22.
