Manchester City has reduced the gap at the top of the Premier League table to just two points following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday night.
City went into the clash determined to capitalize after Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the week. The reigning champions made their intent clear in the first half when Nico O’Reilly calmly slotted home, his controlled finish beating Nick Pope to hand the visitors the lead.
Newcastle responded with an equalizer as Lewis Hall’s effort took a deflection on its way into the net, drawing the hosts level before the break.
However, O’Reilly struck again, this time rising highest to head in a pinpoint cross from Erling Haaland, restoring City’s advantage. Pep Guardiola’s men then held firm to secure all three points and pile pressure on the league leaders.
Arsenal will have the opportunity to extend the gap back to five points when they face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, though they would have played a game more than City.
