Electoral Act: We did best for Nigeria, lawmaking is not like ‘eating amala, ewedu’—Senate Spokesman

The Senate has defended its decision to amend the Electoral Act, saying the process was carried out carefully and with the overall interest of Nigerians in mind.

Speaking on Tuesday during Politics Today on Channels Television, the Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, said lawmaking is a delicate task that must be approached with caution, not rushed decisions.

DAILY POST reports that the Senate on Tuesday amended the Electoral Act to allow electronic transmission of election results, while also making provisions for possible technical challenges during elections.

The amendment marked a reversal of the Senate’s earlier position, which rejected compulsory electronic transmission of results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

Explaining the shift, Adaramodu said lawmakers were mindful of the need to close potential loopholes that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

According to him, the amendment was designed to ensure that any flaws in the system do not erode Nigerians’ trust in elections.

He stressed that the Senate’s actions were guided by patriotism, adding that the decision taken represents what lawmakers believe is in the best interest of the country.
