Election to begin for FC Barcelona’s presidency as Laporta resigns

The process to elect a new president of FC Barcelona is now underway, with club members set to vote on March 15.

The development follows the resignation of Joan Laporta, who stepped aside in line with club statutes to enable him to seek re-election later this year. Laporta, who assumed office in March 2021 after securing 54 percent of the votes, has been in charge for nearly three years.

His departure is described as procedural rather than political, as required by the club’s regulations ahead of fresh elections.

In the interim, Vice-President Rafa Yuste will serve as acting president for the next three and a half months.

Meanwhile, former club executive Xavier Vilajoana and economist Marc Ciria have also declared their intentions to contest the Barcelona presidency.
