A Magistrate Court has jailed a young Nigerian woman, identified simply as Jennifer for seven years for allegedly failing to show up after collecting N30,000 transport fare from her boyfriend.
The court judgement as captured in a viral video offered an option of N450,000 to be paid to the complainant, one Mr Emmanuel (sure name withdrawn).
The judgement which was delivered in Igbo language held that Jennifer’s actions amounted to a breach of promise and financial deceit.
According to the video, Jennifer was found guilty for obtaining money under false pretenses.
The Magistrate also stressed the need to deter fraudulent practices in relationships and online engagements.
The ruling has triggered mixed reactions, with some commending the court for upholding justice, while others argue that the sentence may be too severe for the offense.
