A heated session erupted in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after lawmakers clashed over the alleged non-funding of constituency projects across the country.
The controversy began when the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in Abia State, Alex Mascot, moved a motion calling on President Bola Tinubu to appear before the House and explain the persistent failure to release funds for constituency projects.
According to the lawmaker, the lack of funding has stalled development efforts despite huge public spending.
“Come and explain to us why we are spending trillions of naira drilling roads, doing constant roads, yet Nigerians are dying.”
The motion received support from another lawmaker, who proposed an amendment urging the House to suspend legislative activities for one week until the issue is fully addressed.
The proposal, however, sharply divided members and sparked a rowdy session on the floor of the Green Chamber.
Hon. Yusuf Gagdi opposed the motion, arguing that there was no need to summon the President since the implementation and funding of constituency projects fall under the responsibility of relevant government agencies.
He also rejected the suggestion that the House should shut down for one week, describing the proposal as unnecessary.
Gagdi’s counter-amendment was met with stiff opposition from several lawmakers, triggering heated exchanges and shouting among members.
As tensions escalated, Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, intervened and directed lawmakers to vote in order to determine the House’s position on the matter and restore order.
