No fewer than 50 people have reportedly lost their lives after a military airstrike mistakenly struck a busy weekly market in Jilli village, situated along the border of Borno and Yobe states.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening at a time when traders and residents were engaged in normal commercial activities, resulting in heavy casualties.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that multiple fighter jets participated in the operation, which was said to be targeting suspected terrorist elements in the area.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru, acknowledged the incident but said he could not immediately provide further details regarding the strike.
Sources noted that the air operation was aimed at flushing out terrorists operating within the المنطقة, but it inadvertently affected civilians at the marketplace.
