Ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final against Morocco, Nigeria’s Super Eagles assistant captain Victor Osimhen has revealed that former Nigerian strikers Odion Ighalo and Obafemi Martins are the biggest inspirations behind his career with the national team.
Osimhen made the remarks while acknowledging that he never had the opportunity to watch late Nigerian legend Rashidi Yekini play during his active years with the Super Eagles.
The Galatasaray forward is currently just two goals away from equalling Yekini’s long-standing record of 37 goals for Nigeria.
Speaking via CBS Sports Golazo, Osimhen praised Yekini’s lasting legacy, noting that his achievements continue to motivate generations of Nigerian footballers.
“Although I didn’t watch Rashidi Yekini, blessed memory, play, he has done something that has inspired a lot of people, and that inspires me as well,” Osimhen said.
He added that Ighalo and Martins played a major role in shaping his journey with the national team.
“Players like Odion Ighalo, who I draw a lot of inspiration from, and also Obafemi Martins, have really influenced me. For me, being close to breaking Yekini’s record is very special.
“It’s something I will never forget in my life. I hold it in very high esteem, and it’s a great honor for me,” Osimhen concluded.
