AFCON 2025: Super Eagles boycott Algeria trip over unpaid bonuses

Players and officials of the Super Eagles have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech ahead of their quarter-final clash against Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations over unpaid bonuses.

The development was disclosed by BBC Africa journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco covering the tournament.

Nigeria are scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday evening, but preparations have been thrown into uncertainty after the team declined to travel or participate in further training sessions.

According to reports, the players are yet to receive bonuses for the four matches they have played so far in the competition.

Under head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles recorded group-stage victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda, before cruising to a 4–0 win against Mozambique in the Round of 16.

It is understood that the team has resolved not to resume training or honour the trip to Marrakech until the outstanding bonus payments are fully addressed.
