The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, PETROAN has described the demand by civil servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council for petrol to be sold at N500 per litre as a “miracle.”
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this in an interview with Nigerian Newssphere on Monday.
Gillis-Harry said the demand does not reflect the current realities of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, making a reduction in the price of petrol to N500 per litre practically impossible under prevailing market conditions.
He said Nigerians and the Federal Government cannot afford to return to the era of fuel subsidies, which he said placed significant pressure on the country’s finances.
According to him, those demanding petrol at N500 per litre should establish their own refineries, logistics networks and retail outlets if they believe the product can be sold at that price.
“It will be a miracle. Let’s be serious, those demanding N500 per litre fuel should go and build their refinery and get their logistics, and get their retail outlets to sell at N500 per litre,” he said.
His comments came as the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), meets with refiners, depot owners, marketers and other stakeholders over competitive pricing of petroleum products.

The meeting followed recent movements in petrol prices amid changes in global crude oil prices.
Earlier, Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price by N25 per litre to N1,325 per litre following a decline in crude oil prices.
