Social commentator and businessman, Isaac Fayose, has claimed that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, would comfortably win the 2027 presidential election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Fayose made the claim on Tuesday while appearing on News Central TV, amid recent comments by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, that the opposition would find it difficult to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the nation’s capital.
Wike has repeatedly said he would mobilise support for Tinubu in the FCT and Rivers State ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, Fayose disagreed with the minister, insisting that Obi enjoys significant support in Abuja.
“Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi,” Fayose said.
Fayose further alleged that the ruling party could attempt to manipulate the election, but said the NDC had strategies in place to prevent any such move.
He said voters were ready to participate in the election, adding that the party was focused on identifying possible ways the opposition could be prevented from fully participating in the electoral process.
“People are ready to vote. All we are scared of now is what angle are they going to suppress us this time? This is the only area we are trying to fine-tune,” he said.
Fayose also urged Nigerians to engage people at the grassroots to establish their preferred candidates ahead of the election.
“Go to the street and try to talk to one or two people, ask them who are you going to vote for?” he said.
He said Nigeria could also adopt the practice of conducting mock elections or opinion polls before the actual election to gauge voters’ preferences.
“In abroad, before the proper election, they seek people’s opinions on who they want to vote for through mock election. We don’t do that in Nigeria, but we need to start doing it,” he added.
