Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman was on target, but Atlético Madrid were beaten by Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday night.
Sociedad made a dream start, taking the lead in the opening minute through Ander Barrenetxea, before Lookman drew Atletico level at 1-1 later in the first half.
The Nigerian winger’s strike marked his third goal in the competition and his seventh across all competitions this season.
Atlético was forced to fight back twice in the encounter, with Julián Álvarez equalizing after Mikel Oyarzabal had restored Sociedad’s lead from the penalty spot.
After extra time failed to produce a winner, the match was decided via penalties, where Sociedad goalkeeper Unai Marrero emerged as the hero by saving the first two spot-kicks.
The victory secured Sociedad’s fourth Copa del Rey title.
For Atletico, attention now shifts to the UEFA Champions League, where they face Arsenal in the semi-finals, their last remaining chance of silverware this season.
