WAFCON 2026: CAF President Motsepe confirms host amid uncertainty

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that Morocco will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, as earlier scheduled.

Morocco, which successfully staged the 2022 edition, was awarded the hosting rights for both the 2024 and 2026 tournaments two years ago. However, speculation emerged that the North African nation might withdraw from hosting the 2026 competition following controversies surrounding the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Amid the uncertainty, South Africa indicated its readiness to step in as an alternative host if required.

Addressing journalists on Friday, Motsepe dismissed the rumors, stressing that CAF would not alter the tournament schedule. He said, “Several nations are interested and have asked, ‘Please, can we host it?’ but they want to change the dates. We cannot change the dates because this tournament serves as a qualifier for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“The WAFCON will continue, it will be successful, and we will ensure it takes place within this specific window.”
