Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has outlined reasons the “City Boy” movement supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election failed to gain traction in Nigeria’s Southeast.
Posting on X on Thursday, Ejimakor said his findings indicate that the initiative struggled due to widespread apathy towards electoral politics among many youths in the region.
He explained that a large number of Igbo youths are unwilling to participate in any general elections while Kanu remains in detention.
“From my investigations, the City Boys movement quickly failed in the Southeast because vast majorities of Igbo youths are not interested in any general elections that will be held while Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in prison,” Ejimakor wrote.
According to him, Kanu’s continued incarceration has become the overriding issue influencing political engagement in the Southeast.
“For them & for now, that is the #BigElephant in the room,” he added.
The “City Boy” movement had earlier appointed businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, as its Southeast coordinator. However, its activities in Imo State reportedly recorded low turnout and limited success.
