2026 World Cup: Egypt drags Argentina to FIFA after elimination

Egypt have lodged an official complaint with FIFA over the officiating in their dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

The North African side also called on FIFA to remove French referee Francois Letexier from officiating the remainder of the tournament.

Following the defeat, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan criticised Letexier’s performance, describing the officiating as “unfair” and alleging that the tournament was being “directed towards Argentina.”

Argentina booked their place in the quarter-finals against Switzerland after scoring three goals within a 13-minute spell to overturn the contest.

However, the decisive late goal sparked controversy, with Hassan insisting Egypt should have been awarded a penalty moments before Julián Álvarez launched the counter-attack that culminated in **Enzo Fernández>’s 92nd-minute winning header.
