President William Ruto of Kenya on Thursday fired all his cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General of the country amid a youth protest.
Ruto disclosed this in a countrywide broadcast on Thursday.
He however spared Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Ruto has been under intense pressure from the citizenry to resign amid his response to the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protest which led to the death of many.
Ruto said, the now withdrawn Finance Bill, which required reorganization of Kenya’s budget and fiscal management, has brought the country to a reflection point.
“Upon reflection, listening keenly to what people have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have today in line with the powers given to me by the constitution, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and of course, the Office of the Deputy President,” he said.
This move comes after Ruto earlier withdrew the controversial Finance Bill which was meant to impose more taxes on Kenyans despite economic hardship.
