FIFA set to introduce major VAR change for 2026 World Cup

FIFA is planning to implement a significant change to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocol at the 2026 World Cup, despite initial resistance from football stakeholders.

The global football body is moving forward with plans to expand VAR’s scope to include reviews on corner-kick decisions during next year’s tournament.

In October, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) met and agreed to widen VAR’s remit to cover incidents such as wrongly issued yellow cards that may warrant upgrades. However, the proposal to allow VAR to review corner-kick situations was rejected at the time.

According to BBC Sport, FIFA has decided to proceed regardless and will push ahead with the corner-kick review system for the World Cup, even though domestic leagues have declined to adopt it for their competitions.
