There was panic at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Thursday after human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, reportedly collapsed during a Democracy Day protest.
Sowore was said to have fallen after a confrontation between protesters and police officers who attempted to disperse the gathering.
The protesters had assembled at the venue to demonstrate against rising insecurity, economic hardship and what they described as poor governance in the country.
Eyewitnesses said security operatives deployed tear gas canisters to break up the protest, forcing many demonstrators to flee the area.
Amid the ensuing confusion, Sowore reportedly collapsed and was immediately attended to by supporters and sympathisers at the scene.
He has since been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
The circumstances surrounding his condition remain unclear as of the time of filing this report.
