A United States Congressman, John James, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, during proceedings on the floor of the US Congress.
Speaking on Thursday, James alleged that Nigeria is one of the deadliest places in the world for Christians and urged the Nigerian government to ensure Kanu receives a fresh trial in line with constitutional and international legal standards.
According to the US lawmaker, Kanu should be retried based on evidence, with full access to legal representation, medical care, and humane conditions of detention as required under international law.
“Nigeria is the deadliest place on earth to be a Christian today. Since 2019, tens to hundreds of Christians in Nigeria have been slaughtered as part of a sustained pattern of religiously motivated violence by Islamist jihadists, ignored or enabled by the Nigerian government.
“Extremist groups like Boko Haram are allowed to operate without any meaningful response from authorities.
“A courageous leader named Nnamdi Kanu was convicted in a false show trial for speaking out about what’s happening in Nigeria. He’s currently serving a life sentence in prison, convicted on false terrorism charges.
“I implore my colleagues to support my bill for the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally.
“America gives billions of dollars to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund a Christian genocide. We have the moral obligation to stand up, so that our Christian brothers and sisters can worship the Lord our God in peace,” James said.
The congressman’s remarks have drawn attention to Kanu’s continued detention, which has remained a subject of legal and political debate in Nigeria.
