The Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining collaboration with the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and other stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications industry and deepen public awareness of regulatory initiatives.
The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, made the pledge while receiving a delegation of the NIPR, led by its President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, at the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday.
According to a statement at the weekend, Maida said the Commission would continue to partner with relevant professional bodies, including the NIPR, to promote responsible communication, stakeholder engagement, and public awareness on issues affecting the telecommunications sector.
The NCC boss also congratulated the NIPR on winning the bid to host the 2026 World Public Relations Forum in Nigeria, describing the feat as a reflection of perseverance and effective communication.
“It tells a compelling story of perseverance, strategic communication, and the importance of owning the narrative. It also reflects our ability to convincingly demonstrate to the Global Alliance and other stakeholders why Nigeria deserves the chance to host the forum,” Maida said.
He stressed the need to project a positive image of Nigeria internationally, noting that the African Telecoms Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL) is scheduled to hold in Nigeria in July 2026.
According to him, the NIPR should leverage the international events to further enhance Nigeria’s reputation and showcase the country’s strengths to the global community.
Speaking on the Commission’s regulatory efforts, Maida said the NCC is intensifying education, sensitisation and awareness campaigns aimed at improving accountability and ensuring the stability of the telecom industry.
He listed some of the initiatives to include campaigns on the protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), efficient data usage, simplified tariff directives for mobile network operators, the public coverage map initiative, and measures to promote competitiveness within the industry.
The NCC chief said the Commission’s reforms and policy decisions have begun to yield positive results, particularly in attracting fresh investments into the sector.
“Through the efforts that we have been making to stabilize the sector; we have been able to restore investor confidence. The level of investment we are seeing now is not about keeping the lights on, it is about growing the industry and this is something we have not seen for years before my time; and it is a sign of investors saying we have confidence in the sector, in the reforms of the government, in the regulator and we believe there is opportunity in this market,” he stated.
In his remarks, NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, commended the NCC for its commitment to collaboration and stakeholder engagement, while acknowledging the Commission’s role in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
He expressed the institute’s readiness to partner with the Commission on initiatives that promote responsible communication, reputation management, and public awareness of the NCC’s regulatory programmes.
