Nigeria’s Burna Boy breaks record for most monthly listeners by African artist in Spotify history

Nigerian music superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has set a new milestone after becoming the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners in Spotify history.

The Grammy-winning singer recently reached 46.84 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform, surpassing the previous African record of 46.58 million held by South African sensation Tyla.

Burna Boy has since extended the record further, with his monthly Spotify audience climbing to 47.3 million listeners. The achievement places him on course to become the first African artist to reach the 50 million monthly listeners mark on the platform.

The remarkable increase in streams has largely been driven by his FIFA World Cup collaboration with Shakira, titled Dai Dai.

The song recently climbed to the top of Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to achieve the feat since Wizkid reached the summit through his feature on Drake’s 2016 global hit, One Dance.
