Meta-owned social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, suffered a widespread global outage on Friday, leaving millions of users unable to access their accounts.
The disruption, which occurred on June 12, 2026, affected Facebook’s main website, Messenger service, and mobile application. Many users reported being automatically logged out of their accounts without warning.
Attempts to log back in were unsuccessful, with users receiving error messages stating that “an unexpected error occurred.” Visitors to Facebook’s website were also met with a notice indicating that the company was working to resolve the issue.
As the outage persisted, affected users flocked to the social media platform X to confirm whether others were experiencing similar problems and to share their frustrations.
Meanwhile, Downdetector, a real-time platform that monitors online service disruptions through user reports, recorded a significant surge in complaints related to Facebook and its associated services before the platform itself encountered technical difficulties.
According to Downdetector data on Friday afternoon, more than 100,000 users reported difficulties logging into the Facebook app. In addition, over 9,000 users reported issues with Instagram, while more than 20,000 complaints were logged regarding Facebook Messenger.
As of the time of filing this report, Meta had not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage.
