The Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential election because he ignored advice he gave him regarding the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega.
Mbaka made the remarks in a viral video while clarifying his earlier comments that the insecurity facing Nigeria has political undertones.
The cleric had previously alleged that the country’s security challenges were being orchestrated by some politicians to undermine President Bola Tinubu, similar to what he claimed happened to Jonathan before the 2015 election.
His comments sparked reactions on social media, with some users linking Mbaka to Jonathan’s defeat in his re-election bid.
Responding to the criticism, Mbaka insisted that Jonathan’s loss was not caused by him but by the former president’s refusal to heed what he described as divine counsel.
“Forget about what they are saying on social media. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was my friend; the case is different,” Mbaka said.
“Jonathan didn’t fail because I failed him, he decided to fail. I told him what to do to win the election, but he refused.
“He failed because he disobeyed the advice of a man of God. I told him to remove Jega, that Jega had already betrayed him, but he refused to remove Jega.”
