Portuguese giants Benfica have confirmed that Jose Mourinho is set to become the next manager of Real Madrid after reaching an agreement with the Spanish club.
In a statement released on Tuesday night, Benfica disclosed that Real Madrid had formally expressed its intention to appoint Mourinho, with the veteran Portuguese coach already giving his consent to the move.
According to the club, Real Madrid will pay a compensation fee of €15 million to secure the services of the 63-year-old manager.
Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu comes shortly after club president Florentino Perez was re-elected over the weekend.
The Benfica statement read: “Benfica SAD has informed the CMVM that Real Madrid CF has formally expressed its intention to hire Jose Mourinho for the amount of 15 million euros, with the coach having given his agreement.”
The club also paid tribute to Mourinho, stating: “Thank you, Jose Mourinho.”
Benfica further announced that Marco Silva will replace Mourinho at the club after leaving Fulham following a five-year spell.
Confirming Silva’s appointment, Benfica said: “Sport Lisboa e Benfica, SAD announces, in a statement to the CMVM, that it has reached an agreement with Marco Silva for the signing of an employment contract valid for two seasons, extendable until 2028/29.”
