The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that bandits were arrested at the Akure Airport.
Nigerian Newssphere recalls that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria had on Sunday announced the arrest of four suspected bandits within the vicinity of the airport, a development that sparked concerns online.
However, reacting to the reports, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Abayomi Jimoh, described the claims as misleading.
According to him, no arrest of bandits took place at the airport, and there was no security breach at the facility.
Jimoh explained that the command actually received credible intelligence from a concerned resident about the activities of suspected kidnappers around the Eleyewo area of Akure.
Acting on the information, police operatives launched a targeted operation in the area, which led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be supplying logistics to kidnapping gangs operating in the state.
He said preliminary investigations showed that the suspects were involved in providing support for kidnap operations and had already made useful confessional statements aiding further investigations and efforts to apprehend other members of the criminal network.
The police spokesperson urged residents to disregard claims that bandits were arrested at the airport, describing such reports as false and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
He also reassured the public that security around critical infrastructure in the state, including the airport, remains intact and urged residents to continue their lawful activities while providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
