The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restated its readiness to conduct the 2027 general elections, even as the amendment of the Electoral Act remains pending at the National Assembly.
The commission revealed that it has already finalized the election timetable and schedule of activities while awaiting legislative action on the proposed amendments to the law.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
He noted that although INEC has submitted its inputs to lawmakers, the timing of the passage of the amended Electoral Act could still have implications for some elements of the election program.
According to him, certain activities captured in the timetable may need to be reviewed depending on when the National Assembly concludes work on the amendment.
Amupitan, however, assured stakeholders that the commission remains fully committed to conducting a transparent and credible election.
He added that until the amended Electoral Act is passed and signed into law, INEC will continue to operate strictly within the provisions of the existing legal framework.
