England captain Harry Kane has emerged as the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or despite his country’s World Cup semi-final exit to Argentina.
According to Spanish outlet AS, the Bayern Munich striker is currently the frontrunner for football’s most prestigious individual award after an outstanding campaign at club and international level.
Kane scored six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he finished behind France’s Kylian Mbappé, who netted 10 times. Argentina captain Lionel Messi scored eight goals, while Erling Haaland and Kane’s England teammate Jude Bellingham each finished with seven.
Mbappé and Messi are regarded as strong contenders in the Ballon d’Or race, but Kane is expected to face his toughest challenge from Spain duo Rodri and Lamine Yamal, who inspired La Roja to the 2026 World Cup title in North America.
If he wins the award, it would mark the first Ballon d’Or of Kane’s career.
The 33-year-old enjoyed a remarkable season with Bayern Munich, scoring 61 goals in 51 matches as the German champions completed a domestic league and cup double.
Since joining Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, Kane has registered an impressive 98 goals in 94 appearances for the Bundesliga giants.
