2026 World Cup: IOC finally speaks on probe into FIFA President Gianni Infantino

The International Olympic Committee, IOC, has declined to investigate FIFA President Gianni Infantino following an ethics complaint filed by human rights organisation, FairSquare.

FairSquare had alleged that Infantino breached ethical standards requiring political neutrality, citing his alleged relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The organisation also raised concerns over FIFA’s decision to allow United States forward Folarin Balogun to escape with only a yellow card during a World Cup match and the reported award of a FIFA peace prize to Trump.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, the IOC said the allegations did not fall within the scope of its Ethics Code and therefore did not warrant an investigation or disciplinary action against the FIFA president.

According to the IOC, the complaint primarily concerned FIFA’s internal governance, its relationship with governments, and decisions relating to the application of competition rules.

“The complaint mainly deals with how an international sports federation runs its operations, its ties with governments, and decisions about following competition rules—things that are not covered by the IOC’s Ethics Code,” the IOC said.
