Defending champions Argentina have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after fighting back from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
Egypt appeared to be on course for a famous victory after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, scored in either half, handed the Pharaohs a commanding 2-0 lead. Lionel Messi also missed a penalty during the encounter, compounding Argentina’s struggles.
However, the South Americans produced a remarkable comeback. Cristian Romero pulled one back before Messi redeemed himself by finding the equaliser. Enzo Fernandez then completed the turnaround with the decisive goal to send Argentina into the last eight.
The Albiceleste will now face the winner of the Round of 16 tie between Switzerland and Colombia.
With Argentina’s victory, seven teams have now booked their places in the quarter-finals. Three quarter-final fixtures have already been confirmed, with Belgium set to face Spain, England taking on Norway, and France meeting Morocco.
