Brazil football legend, Ronaldo Nazário has declared Lionel Messi the greatest footballer of all time, saying there should no longer be any debate over the Argentine’s place in history.
Ronaldo made the remarks after Messi delivered a stunning hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The three goals saw the Inter Miami star surpass Ronaldo’s scoring tally at the World Cup, further cementing his remarkable legacy in the competition.
Speaking in an interview with A Bola, Ronaldo said Messi’s latest performance should finally put an end to arguments over who deserves the title of football’s greatest-ever player.
“It’s time for the world to stop hiding and accept the fact that he is the best player of all time,” Ronaldo said.
“He continues to deliver every season and in the World Cup and, yet, there are still doubts about him. It is an unforgettable and historic night that will remain forever.”
Messi’s display against Algeria marked another milestone in an illustrious career that has already seen him win multiple individual and team honours, including the World Cup title with Argentina.
The 38-year-old was the standout performer as the defending champions began their 2026 World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, with his hat-trick helping Argentina secure all three points.
