BREAKING: Nigerian Govt declares public Holiday 

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in celebration of Democracy Day.

 

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

 

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government described June 12 as a landmark date in Nigeria’s history, dedicated to honouring the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens whose struggles paved the way for democratic governance in the country.

 

The statement noted that the contributions of the nation’s democratic heroes continue to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.

 

“The legacy of the heroes continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the statement said.

 

Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

 

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democracy and national development.
