The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has emerged as the party’s flag bearer after securing a resounding victory in the party’s nationwide primary election.
Obi polled more than 45 million votes in the exercise conducted across the country, defeating other contenders to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.
According to the results collated from the six geopolitical zones, Obi recorded strong support across all regions.
In the South-West, he garnered 6.75 million votes, while the North-West delivered 7 million votes in his favor.
The former Anambra State governor secured 4.45 million votes in the North-East and 5 million votes in the North-Central region.
In the South-East, Obi polled 3.8 million votes, while the South-South contributed 5.3 million votes to his overall tally.
The outcome of the primary election cements Obi’s position as the NDC’s presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket with over 10.9 million votes.
This means that the incumbent president, Tinubu, would slug it out with Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, and former president Goodluck Jonathan of the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the People’s Democratic Party.
