Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a man, Hamatu Modu, to 40 years in prison for supplying food and intelligence to Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.
Modu was prosecuted by the Federal Government through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice after he admitted in open court to aiding the terrorist group.
He was arraigned on a four-count charge on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to all counts. The prosecution was led by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).
In her judgment, Justice Nyako sentenced Modu to 10 years on each count, amounting to 40 years. However, following a plea by defense counsel, the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning he will serve 10 years in prison.
In a related development, another convict, Isah Ali, was also sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for similar offenses. His jail term is to take effect from the date of his arrest three years ago.
Both convicts pleaded guilty to the charges against them.
The court further directed that they undergo rehabilitation and deradicalization programs after completing their sentences. It also ordered the Federal Ministry of Interior to determine the correctional facilities where they will serve their terms.
