A prominent figure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday joined protesters at the National Assembly in Abuja over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Electoral Reform Bill.
The protest, tagged “Occupy National Assembly,” saw Nigerian youths and pro-democracy activists converge at the entrance of the federal legislature to oppose the Senate’s rejection of electronic transmission of election results.
The demonstrators insist that electronic transmission is critical to improving transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process and called on lawmakers to reconsider their position on the contentious clause in the bill.
The protest attracted a heavy security presence, with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed around the National Assembly complex to maintain order.
As of the time of filing this report, the demonstration remained peaceful, while security personnel continued to monitor activities at the scene.
